From a copperhead-infested, dilapidated barn on a farm near Pittsboro, North Carolina, Dave extracted is first pieces of metal and applied color; rusted-shut near empty cans of old house paint. From this humble beginning, and years later, Dave became a Saturday morning regular at the Pueblo, Colorado scrap yard. It was there that the majority of his metal monstrosities were found, weighed, lugged home, and observed.
Why metal? There are two $50.00 words that will help to explain Dave’s use of metal. Metal has a teleological history. These pieces have naturally inherited their own design, their own wrinkles, as a result of being subjected to nature. They present a living puzzle that is solved when metempsychosis occurs; from their resting place in a scrap yard, they undergo a transformation into a new life under the artist’s scalpel.
Dave was raised in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. Before that he lived in Augusta, Arkansas - Ottawa, Canada and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After that he lived in Durham, North Carolina - Bartlett, New Hampshire - St. Petersburg, Florida – Allston, East Boston, Everett and Malden, Massachusetts – Pueblo and Colorado Springs, Colorado. He has a double B.A. in Useless 1 and Useless 2 (Anthropology and Philosophy) from Duke University, and a Masters degree in Public Policy from the University of Colorado. Dave, wife Nichole, and their 3-year old son Oscar recently relocated to Iowa (Nichole moved back), but Dave and Oscar are brand-spanking-new Iowans!
Dave took one art class when he was 5 years old.
Some of his art was exhibited in a pizza joint in Denver, Colorado.
During the month of February, 2010, Dave will have the honor of having his pieces exhibited at the Fisher Community Center in Marshalltown. He is thrilled to have his metal monstrosities in the auditorium right next to the gallery which houses real art - the Impressionist Master’s collection.
